Biography

Jeffrey L. Zitsman, MD holds the rank of Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is the founder and director of the Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery (CABS) at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of NY Presbyterian. For more than 15 years, Dr. Zitsman has led a multidisciplinary team who have evaluated more than 1000 candidates for adolescent weight loss surgery. He is the Principal Investigator for the largest FDA-approved study of gastric banding in adolescents. For the past 10 years, Dr. Zitsman has been performing sleeve gastrectomy to help young people with severe obesity improve their health. Over 500 bariatric procedures have been performed at MSCHONYP. Dr. Zitsman graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in natural sciences. He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1976 and completed his surgical residency there in 1981. From 1983-85 he trained as fellow in pediatric surgery at the Babies Hospital in NY. Dr. Zitsman is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgery. He currently serves as Chair of the Pediatric Obesity Committee of ASMBS. Dr. Zitsman is board certified in Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care.
