Biography

Dr. Waataja received his PhD in neuroscience at the University of Minnesota in 2007 involving elucidating the molecular substrates of neurodegenerative diseases. In his postdoctoral fellowship, at the University of Minnesota, he performed spinal cord and peripheral nerve electrophysiology to study mechanisms of chronic pain. He joined Reshape Lifesciences as Director of Research and lead an interdisciplinary team to study vagus nerve electrophysiology as well as the use of bioelectronics as a method to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. His research continues to focus on novel methods to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus using vagus nerve neuromodulation with major funding through NIH Small Business Innovation Research grants.
