Biography

DeMaria is Professor and Chair of the Division of General and Bariatric Surgery at East Carolina University. Formerly, he was Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and Duke University. He is also Immediate Past-President of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and has served that society in many leadership roles since 2003. DeMaria was educated at Boston University and trained in surgery at Brown University. He has trained more than 30 bariatric surgeons, spoken at countless conferences across the U.S. and abroad, and published over 130 articles, 35 book chapters, and 6 books. He developed one of the first risk scores for bariatric surgery (OS-MRS). He is a member of the prestigious American Surgical Association.
